About Tops...
Tops Market was built in May of 1951 by the Topshe family, who for two generations built a reputation of quality and service, at fair prices. In June of 1980, John and Nancylee Salerno purchased the 7,000 sq. ft. business in their hometown of Plantsville, CT. Top's Market

Over the past twenty years Tops has seen many changes. A series of face lifts, three total remodels within the existing walls, and two additions has made Tops the largest independent supermarket in the area with more than 17,000 sq. ft. of shopping area. The largest and latest addition took place in 1997. The grand reopening of Tops Supermarket, Inc. occurred in December of 1997 with the addition of a new partner, Betsy Tooker. Betsy had been a 30 year veteran of Tops who has devoted herself to the growth and nurturing of the business. Some of the additions include a beautiful landscape, a flowing fountain at its entrance, and a forty foot painting by a local artist that hangs on the wall in its produce department, depicting Fall in New England. For these features and more, Tops received the Southington Chamber of Commerce Beautification Award for 1998.

Small, But Proud!
Although Tops is a small, independently-owned supermarket, it has always been a leader in technological advancements. Tops was the first to introduce an in-store bakery where the baking was done on the premises in 1980; Tops was the first to offer a full line of catering services at the supermarket level in 1987; and Tops was the first in the introduction of scan-card savings and clip-less coupons in 1993.

Today, Tops caters events for up to several hundred people and operates its own banquet facility at the Mt. Southington Ski Resort - The Mountain Room. It is the only supermarket to offer a gourmet meal program, providing home-style meals prepared daily on the premises by their full-time chef and staff.

Tops Supermarket Receives IGA's Highest Honor!
In December 1998 Tops IGA was awarded a 4 Star Store Award. Four stars are awarded to IGA stores that have achieved the highest standards of excellence in Marketing, Sanitation, and food safety. The determination or the number of stars awarded to an IGA store is done by Fresh Check, Inc. an independent third party assessment company.
